Farm life in Canada presents challenges, this winter has been harder than most with a mix of extreme cold and exceptional snow fall. Fields were chest-deep in snow, and our quiet road turned into an icy tunnel of unsurmountable snow banks, blocking off most of my riding territory. Fast forward to the first week of March, and a blast of warmer weather literally boils snow off the fields. A live science lesson, as snow evaporates and thick clouds of fog wander the countryside in an eerie light.
We are left with grass in the fields starting to peek through. A few of the mares are starting to shed, others not sure it’s time yet are holding onto their shaggy winter coats. It will be a while yet before we have green fields, but it’s coming. Spring is the annual rebirth of a farm, new foals to welcome and others to remember fondly.
